Director
Lulu Wei is a Toronto-based director and cinematographer whose work explores themes of space making, cultural identity and queerness. They bring a unique style from their background in commercial and documentary filmmaking. Their debut feature film There’s No Place Like This Place, Anyplace won a Rogers Audience Award at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and was nominated for Best Directing and Best Writing at the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards. As a cinematographer, they have shot feature films and worked on series for Vice, Crave and the CBC. Lulu has shot and directed commercials for brands such as Ikea, Mazda, Air Canada and Scotiabank. They hold an MFA in Documentary Media from Toronto Metropolitan University. When they’re not behind a camera, you’ll usually find Lulu DJing a dance party or throwing an event with New Ho Queen, the queer Asian arts collective they cofounded.
